History of St. Louis
Founded on February 15, 1764, St. Louis’s history begins with French fur traders Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclède, and Auguste Chouteau. It was later sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
St. Louis grew over the years as a thriving port town, given its prime location near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. From 1870 to 1920, it was the fourth-largest city in the country.
Throughout its history, St. Louis has been home to many notable historical events. It hosted the World’s Fair in 1904, and an estimated 20 million people attended.
The first USA-based Olympics games were also held there in the same year. The population boom that followed led to an outward suburban expansion soon after the end of World War II.
