About Kirkwood, MO
Kirkwood has been one of our favorite communities to work with. But what’s it like living here? And what kinds of sights and sounds can you expect when visiting?
Kirkwood is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, just 20 minutes west of downtown. The city is about nine square miles and boasts plenty of features residents love, including high property values, safe neighborhoods, exceptional city services, and quality public and private schools.
Kirkwood is also home to nine historic districts, more than 300 acres of parkland, and a bustling (and growing) downtown scene.
History of Kirkwood
After the St. Louis fire of 1849 and the deadly cholera outbreaks, city planners were determined to build up surrounding communities to help spread out the population density.
In 1850 Hiram W. Leffingwell and Richard Smith Elliott purchased plots of land west of St. Louis that would become today’s Kirkwood.
At the same time, the Missouri Pacific Railroad chief engineer was laying out a route for the train line that directly intersected that area. That man’s name was James P. Kirkwood, after which the town was named.
Since its beginnings, Kirkwood has been deeply intertwined with the railroad. The beautiful and historic Kirkwood Train Station was first erected in 1853, connecting the residents to easy access to St. Louis and cementing the area as a commuter suburb.
The train station was renovated in 1893. And today, it stands as a testament to Kirkwood’s deep connection to the rail.

The People of Kirkwood
Kirkwood has seen quite a bit of growth since its founding in the mid-19th century. Census data from 1880 put the population at just shy of 1,300 residents.
But over the years, the Kirkwood population continued to bloom and blossom, hitting its biggest growth spurt from 1930-1940 (a 107.3% population increase in just a decade). Today, over 29 thousand residents now call Kirkwood home.
This St. Louis suburb is also steeped in culture and historical tradition. There are scores of festivals and events that take place every year. And the community also hosts the longest-running football high school Thanksgiving Day rivalry west of the Mississippi (started in 1907)
