About Bridgeton, MO
Bridgeton is known as the transportation hub of the Greater St. Louis area, thanks to St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Bridgeton is a second-ring suburb of Greater St. Louis. It’s located in northwestern St. Louis County, at the intersection of I-70 and the St. Louis outer belt.
The Missouri River serves as the city’s northwestern boundary. Its proximity to local transportation routes has long influenced Bridgeton. These routes date back to Native American trails established by the Osage Nation. These trails became the basis of the first roads in the area. Famous roads such as Natural Bridge and the historic St. Charles Rock Road. These roads date back to Spanish, French, and early American settlements.
History of Bridgeton, MO
With its beginnings stretching back to 1794, Bridgeton is one of the oldest communities in the Greater St. Louis area. It started as a stopping point between St. Louis and St. Charles, growing in popularity thanks to its proximity to a ferry across the Missouri River.
Before starting their Lewis and Clark Expedition, some notable people who passed through Bridgeton included Meriwether Lewis and his traveling troupe.
As Bridgeton continued to grow, the city was soon incorporated in 1843. Today, it holds the distinction of having one of the oldest continuous state charters. The Payne-Gentry House also contains the oldest surviving doctors’ office in Missouri.

The People of Bridgeton
At its start in the late 18th century, Bridgeton was made up of just over 100 residents. And over the following century, the population stayed relatively stable.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that Bridgeton started expanding rapidly, going from 202 residents to 7,820 in just one decade. And by 1970, the city reached its peak at 19,992 residents. However, the expansion plan for the airport led to 2000 homes in the city being eliminated, cutting down the town’s population by the thousands.
Though the population may have shrunk, Bridgeton remains a city full of retail businesses, well-kept parks, and plenty of other fun, leisure, and commerce opportunities.
